Bringing history to life

In this unit students will research the American Revolution. Many events during this period helped shape our nation. Writers will be responsible for researching their topics, as well as teaching their topics to their peers. It is essential that they fully engross themselves in the role of a researcher. To do this work they need to use all resources available. This includes the texts we have in class, their textbooks, the internet and of course this website.
In the first part of this unit writers will work within groups and create individual books. The books will be structured as follows:
Chapter 1: All About a Bigger Topic ; The Revolutionary War
Chapter 2: All About a Specific Topic: Specific Topic (Ex. Boston Massacre and Subtopics)
Chapter 3: Story about a Big Decision or Important Moment
Chapter 4: Essay ; Answering Why their topic is important
In the second part of this unit, writers will choose individual topics to research and focus on a more specific subtopic. In this part writers are expected to draw evidence from texts to support their thinking. Students will have to use logical choices about text structure and which information to include in their pieces.
In the last part of the unit, writers are asked to develop their own ideas about the information they have organized and collected. This part of the unit is about their interpretations of historical events and how they relate to their lives. This is difficult work! But they will be ready! Please ask your children questions and ask them to explain WHY they think a certain way. This will help prepare them for this analytical work. Talk about the research they are doing or even better, do it together.
Happy Researching!
