Unit Interpretation Book Clubs

Students will answer the following essential question: How can I work across several texts to heighten my skills at interpretation so I see themes that thread through a text and that sometimes thread across many texts? How can I think about ways in which different authors approach the same theme differently?
Students will also work on answering the following questions through inquiry.

  • How can I read with the lens of looking for themes, learning to spot places in a text where the theme shines through?
  • How can I compare and contrast the way a theme is handled similarly and differently indifferent texts?
  • How can I look at how different authors approach the same theme?

In this unit students will travel back to studying fictional characters, only this time they will focus on developing ideas about themes and the lessons their fictional stories teach us. While we often read for enjoyment, many books have several themes weaved throughout the story. Authors tell stories to teach the reader about life and how to navigate through real life situations.
Students will have the opportunity to work with their peers to accomplish this meaningful work. It is essential that they are reading every single night to help facilitate this work. You can help your child by asking; "What do you think this story is truly about? What lessons does it teach you?"

Here are some common themes found in fictional texts...
