In this exciting unit readers will tackle nonfiction reading by making connections, activating prior knowledge and paying attention to text structures. Research has shown, readers that can identify text structure will be able to orient themselves as readers of nonfiction text better. Readers will also work towards tackling tricky vocabulary by using prefixes, suffixes and prior knowledge. Readers will do this work with a variety of topics.
Next, readers will work together researching a Whole-class Research project about weather. They will learn how to plan a research project using various templates and graphic organizers. We will use books, magazines and newspaper articles, websites and even videos to help synthesize what we have learned. In addition, readers will learn how to write about what they are learning by summarizing.
Finally, readers will forge ahead by completing a second research project with more independence. They will compare and contrast and seek out patterns across two topics. Readers will also realize how important it is to evaluate all sources of information.
