Dear Parents and Students of Class 302 / 224,
Spring is almost officially here. We have been working hard each day growing as readers and writers. It is really exciting to see how much each student has grown and adapted to challenges, as well as the changes we have faced each day. I am truly proud of each student! I hope they will continue to push themselves to overcome their own unique challenges.
During Parent Teacher Conferences, many parents asked about the upcoming State tests. The ELA NY State test will take place on April 20- 22nd and the Math NY State test will take place on May 4-6th. Both tests are taken across 2 days and are untimed. Below is the structure of both the ELA and Math tests. To help prepare the kids and become familiar with the structure and questions of the test, we will be working with actual past test passages and questions. All past released tests can be found on Engage NY. Each day will focus on a different reading and writing skill.
On most nights students, will be given a passage to read and answer multiple choice questions and another passage with 1 or 2 written prompts to answer. It is important for them to complete the work assigned each day. In addition, it is important to build reading stamina. To do this, kids need to read each night books on their level. These are the books are found in their "book baggie". Please check with your child each day and make sure they are completing their homework. Homework will be posted on the "Homework" page. You can also ask them, Who is the passage about? What have they learned? and Why is it important?
I just ask that each student come prepared ready to do their very best each and every day. :) If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
With warm regards,
Mrs. Anichich

Dear Families & Students of Class 4C3 and 4C4,
Welcome back! We hope you had a restful and peaceful holiday break.
We know this has been a challenging time for many of our families. There are many changes we are embarking on with this New Year. All students currently enrolled in Blended Learning will be starting in-person learning 5 days a week. To accomplish this there have been changes to student and teacher schedules.
*Mrs. Anichich will be teaching in-person and Ms. Sell will be teaching remotely.
*All specials (except 1 period of gym) will be taught by the classroom teacher.
*All students will be having lunch in the lunchroom. Fourth Grade's lunch time will be 10:47- 11:32.
* Ms. Balzafiore and myself will teach both groups of students. We will (teachers) swap classrooms after lunch. A more specific schedule will follow.
*Mrs. Anichich will be teaching ELA- Reading Workshop, Writing Workshop, & Word Work.
*Ms. Balzafiore will be teaching Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Art.
We will continue to use DOJO and Google Classroom as a way to communicate, assign and grade work.
ELA homework will be posted on this website daily. Click-Homework
*Each night students will be assigned math homework pages, found directly after each lesson.
*Each night students will be required to read independently in a "just right" book for 40 minutes and log.
*Each night students will have some form of writing homework. Assigned work could include a reading response, complete unfinished writing from the day, or complete pages from our New York Ready workbook. All assignments will be clearly explained on the homework page each night.
*Students must log 50 minutes on Lexia.com each week. Lexia.com homework will be assigned on Google Classroom on an individual basis.
*Social Studies and Science homework will be assigned as needed.
We will continue to DOJO and Google Classroom as a way to communicate.
We created this Website a few years ago as a way for students and parents to locate useful information, post homework, and provide an accommodation for students who need extra support. We hope you find it useful and if you would like something added, please feel free to let us know.
All the very best hopes and wishes today and everyday,
Mrs. Anichich & Ms. Balzafiore

Dear Students and Parents of class 4-302
We want to wish you and your families a very happy, healthy and awesome New Year! We are so excited to start the New Year with several exciting units of study!! YAY!!
Reading: During the month of January we will continue our in-depth work on character study, patterns and the lessons they learn by reading deeply.
Writing: We will continue writing literary essays. First, we will write an essay using one text focusing on common character traits, themes, and lessons that our characters learn. Next, we will turn our attention to all those great books we read during our book clubs. Students will choose two and write an essay comparing and contrasting patterns they have noticed across texts.
Social Studies: The best part is that for social studies we will use this time to increase our knowledge about our country's development as a young nation. Our main focus will be the Colonial Period.
Math: We start off the new year jumping right into an extremely important unit for the fourth grade, FRACTIONS! This domain will include chapters 6, 7, 8, and 9.
Please take the brief survey below.

Dear Parents and Fourth Graders,
This past month has been super exciting getting to know everyone and working on our daily routines.
During one of "Meet the Teacher Night" sessions, a parent suggested listing our current units of study to help understand what we are teaching in the classroom. We hope the following information is helpful. We will continue to update this page as we change our units of study. Again, we are always open to suggestions and ideas! Ultimately our goal is the same as our parents--- Do our very best, for every child.
Our current units of study are:
Reading: Interpreting Characters- information can be found on the following link Interpreting Characters: The Heart of the Story
Writing: Realistic Fiction- information can be found on the following link The Arc of the Story: Writing Realistic Fiction
In Math, we will be finishing up Chapter 1 :Place Value to the millions place value this week (Chapter test on Tuesday October 3, 2017) and continuing to learn about the base ten number system by learning how to multiply 2 digit by 1 digit (Chapter 2). Mathematics

Dear 4-302 Parents and Students,
Welcome back! We hope you had a a wonderful and restful spring break! We still have a lot to accomplish this school year and we know that you are up for the challenge.
First, we will tackle getting ready for our up coming New York State Mathematics test. We will revisit math domains- Numbers and Operations of Base Ten, Operations and Algebraic Thinking (multi-digit adding, subtracting, multiplying, and division and solving for the unknown) and, Fractions and Operations as well as continue to learn about angles and measurement and data.
We will continue to delve into studying the American Revolution by reading and writing about the sequence of events that caused everyday men and women to fight for independence from Great Britain. In this unit, students will immerse themselves by not only reading about the American Revolution, but also by writing informational books about the specific topics that they have found interesting. Our reading unit of "Reading about History" and our writing unit "Bringing History to Life" will culminate in students writing chapter books that will encompass all that they have learned!
We have also set up students with Google Classroom accounts. Writers will be given the option to write their chapter books through Google Classroom. This is an excellent tool to help students become independent writers as well as learn how to work with others by using peer support and feedback. Ask your child to share their work with you, even better provide them with comments and feedback!

Dear Parents and 4-302 Students,
We just finished celebrating our play's huge success and we are excited to get back to our regular routine! Our first class trip will be on February 6th to Fraunces Tavern, located on 54 Pearl Street, NYC. This experience will provide our students with a connection to the past as we learn about colonial times and the revolutionary period.d
In reading, we will continue to read historical fiction books focusing on setting and our character's perspective. Historical fiction books combine factual elements (history, important people, important places, and events) and intertwine them with fictional characters and plot.
In writing, we will continue writing our literary essays about a short text. As we culminate our unit, writers will write a literary essay where they will provide an analytical analysis of two texts by comparing literary elements. Writers will first develop thesis statements by closely reading short stories and paying careful attention to their characters' traits, motivations, struggles and relationships. Then they will identify two-three reasons to support their thesis and finally provide textual evidence to defend their reasons.
In math, students will work on evaluating and making sense of fractions. We find fractions in our everyday lives. Ask your children questions as you are shopping at the grocery store or even when cooking dinner. For example, would you rather have 5/8 cup or 1/2 of jelly beans? Why?
