NYCDOE has scheduled the tests for only the first 2 days (ELA April 2nd & 3rd and Math for May 1st & 2nd)
Helpful Tips for Parents:
- Help your child develop good study habits, thinking skills, and a positive attitude towards education from an early age.
- Ensure your children has good attendance at school.
- Stay in communication with their teacher.
- Encouraging your children to read as much as possible and to increase their vocabulary - even reading magazines, newspapers, and comic books regularly will help improve their reading skills. Looking for educational games and programs that engage your children.
- Help your children learn how to follow directions carefully.
Test taking Strategies to help your child:
Multiple Choice:
- Read the question and ask yourself what does this question mean? what is it asking me to do is a test taker? They may be more than one part to a question.
- Reread just the relevant part or parts of the text that will help you with this question use your coding to help find those parts quickly or skim for keywords to get to the right part or find a paragraph or lines the question mentions.
- Come up with your own answer before you read the choices.
- Read through all the choices before you pick an answer say to yourself why is this or isn't this the answer?
- If none of them fit with the answer you came up with in your mind reread the question because you might have missed read it
- If you get it down to two choices ask yourself which one would most test takers pick?
Test Taking Strategies to Help Your Child :
Writing Short Responses:
There will 8 short responses on the test. Short response questions will ask the reader to answer a question and use two details. To help support your child, ask them a question and have them give you two valid reasons to support their thinking.
Students have been taught the RACE strategy. They should be using this strategy to answer all written responses.
R= Restate the question
A= Answer the question
C= Give two reasons/evidence- can be quoted from the text as long as proper punctuation is used.
E=Explain
